Multiple Sclerosis, more commonly abbreviated to MS, is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS.)
MS causes a number of symptoms, and in more severe cases can lead to disability and impaired mobility.
MS affects the neurons, which are the cells within the spinal column and brain that relay information around the body.
They create thought and perception, allowing the brain to control the body. Each cell is coated in something known as the myelin sheath, and this is what MS destroys.
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis include changed sensations experienced by the affected person, visual problems, weakness of the muscles, depression, problems with speech and coordination, severe fatigue, cognitive impairment, balance problems and pain.
MS is thought to result from the body’s own immune system turning on the nervous system. The exact cause, unfortunately, remains unknown. MS can either be constant or come in sudden attacks, and sadly it does not have a cure.
MS usually only affects adults, beginning to develop between the ages of 20 and 40 years. MS is more common amongst women than men.
Some life insurance companies apply ratings to people with multiple sclerosis, leading to inflated premiums and more expensive policies. Seeking the advice of a specialist insurance company ensures fair treatment.
