Crohn’s Disease is a chronic, inflammatory disorder that usually affects the small and large intestine. The disease is named after Burrill Crohn, a gastroenterologist who described the disease.
Crohn’s disease is usually diagnosed in the teens or early twenties, but has been recorded in much older people. The disease is recurrent condition, and can be either mild or serious.
Crohn’s disease affects the body in a number of ways, creating apthous ulcers inside the bowel that can cause scarring and stiffness. Ulcers can become deep and puncture holes in the bowel wall, infecting the abdominal cavity.
There are a number of forms of Crohn’s disease, including large intestine Crohn colitis, and small intestine Crohn enteritis. Commonly Crohn’s disease affects the ileum (Crohn ileitis.)
The symptoms of Crohn’s include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss and fever. Crohn’s disease can also cause reddish skin nodules, inflamed joints, spine, eyes and liver.
Crohn’s is usually diagnosed using an x-ray or colonoscopy.
Crohn’s disease is usually treated using immune suppressant drugs, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs. In some cases surgery may be necessary.
Some life insurance companies apply ratings to people with Crohn’s disease, leading to inflated premiums and more expensive policies. Seeking the advice of a specialist insurance company ensures fair treatment.
