Life insurance lies could end in trouble

Fri, 04 Jan 2008

According to a recent study by Aviva-owned insurance giant Norwich Union, millions of protection insurance policyholders in the UK risk having their life insurance or critical illness insurance policies cancelled by their insurance companies due to lying about health status when applying for insurance .

The Norwich Union study indicates that as many as one out of every 14 consumers has provided false information about their health or their lifestyle. Some of these consumers have lied about being a smoker or a drinker, whilst others have provided false weight or health information.

The insurance company targeted 5000 of their customers and asked them to own up to omissions. Some 52 per cent of men, and 43 per cent of women, in separate research were found to lie about health to colleagues, friends, family and employers.

Telling a lie on a life insurance application risks complete financial disaster for the beneficiaries of the insurance policy . Some 20 per cent of claims are rejected due to misinformation.
