A Cumbrian farmer deeply in debt has been jailed for a life insurance murder. Robert Wilson, 41, ran over his wife with this tractor, planning to cash her life insurance policy and spend it on a new life with his secret mistress.
Sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court, Wilson was found guilty of the murder of his wife Jane, with a minimum of 22 years before being considered for release. The jury at the three-week long trial heard that Wilson had initially claimed that his wife must have died accidentally.
Concerns over the claims were made by Mrs. Wilson’s grown-up children, who discovered evidence of the farmer’s affair. Mrs. Wilson’s life insurance policy is understood to have been in the region of £400,000.
The verdict follows several similar life insurance murders, where the victim is killed for the payout on their life insurance cover .
