Major insurers reiterate - stop smoking and make life insurance cheaper

Thu, 10 Apr 2008

Smoking and life insurance have dominated the life insurance news in the last month, as it becomes even more clear that smokers taking out life insurance are likely to pay way over the odds on their policy .

Smoking is a more expensive habit than ever before, especially following the tax increases in the budget this year. Several major life insurance companies recently voiced their policy that life insurance premiums for smokers could be almost twice that of non-smokers.

Joe Wiggins of Legal and General was reported as commenting: "Smokers have to pay more for life insurance and critical illness cover because smoking is a serious risk to your health and a major cause of coronary heart disease and lung cancer ."

Ian Durrell of Onlyinsurance.com was reported as agreeing: "Smokers will pay twice the price for CIC cover than a non-smoker - it's a no-win situation for the smoker, their nicotine addiction is tightening both their heart and purse strings."
