Life insurance industry lambasted by IFA

Fri, 05 Oct 2007

One Financial Advisor went on record to condemn the life insurance industry over treatment of gay and lesbian people, although she took the opportunity to publicly state that her company does no discriminate.

Ruth Whitehead, of Ruth Whitehead Associates, made it clear in a statement that discrimination against gay men in the application process for insurance was completely illegal.

Whitehead criticised some life insurance providers who she said rejected gay men simply due to perceptions about lifestyle . Ms. Whitehead, describing the process, reportedly commented: "He would get, immediately and irrespective of his lifestyle, either a decline of his request for health cover or life cover, or a quadrupling of the premium automatically by an idiot actuary who didn't understand the difference between lifestyle and sexual practice."

She apparently concluded: "The opinion is that we don't discriminate and vast swathes of the rest of my so-called profession do."
