The Association of British Insurers (ABI), the body that represents the interests of insurance companies in the UK, have found that false insurance claims could be causing massive damage to the economy, as well as making the average insurance policy much more expensive.
False insurance claims cost insurance companies and honest policy holders around £1.6 billion per annum, around £4 million every day, the ABI revealed. Although life insurance and critical illness insurance were not regarded as being at high risk of false claims, with home contents insurance and buildings insurance more likely to be false claimed against, the problem damages the whole market.
According to USwitch, false motor insurance claims were also a major problem. Nick Starling, the director of general insurance and health at the ABI, reportedly commented: "Honest customers should not have to pay for the cheats. Insurers are committed to reducing the fraud problem. We are devoting greater resources to weeding out the cheats, and working together to detect and combat fraud. The Insurance Fraud Bureau is already having a significant impact on tackling organised insurance fraud."
