Increased life insurance premiums for the obese

Mon, 12 Mar 2007

Norwich Union have recently revealed that the overweight and obese are likely to be offered far higher premiums when applying for a life insurance policy . The insurer raised figures of between 30 and 70 per cent extra costs depending on weight. When a person is overweight or obese, they are perceived by insurance companies as posing a greater risk. Obesity and being overweight lead to loaded insurance premiums because of an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes .

The chief underwriter at Norwich Union, Mr. Jupp, reportedly commented: "Overweight people are extremely sensitive as to how they are perceived, [leading to] periods of anxiety and even depression . The cost of life insurance cover has to reflect these additional risks."

Whether you agree with this statement or not, life insurance does cost more for the overweight than ever before.
