A recent study by Bright Grey, a division of the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Limited, aimed to assess the importance people attach to their insurance, and the type of insurance they prioritise when spending money . Bright Grey found that despite regarding life as the most important type of insurance policy, in reality the majority purchased home contents and travel insurance first.
The study chose a representative sample of 2,000 people, and assessed their attachment to life insurance, home content insurance, mortgage payment insurance, income protection insurance and critical illness cover .
Some startling conclusions were drawn from the study, including the fact that life insurance placed below travel insurance when it came to actually buying. Furthermore, credit cards were as likely to be protected as mortgage payments .
The products director at Bright Grey said that the trend was positively alarming, saying: "This is a real worry. Less than a quarter of people protect their mortgage over three times more people insure their home contents. And although people seem to know how important life insurance can be, many simply arent taking out cover ."
