Legal & General to offer free life cover

Thu, 14 Dec 2006

Following the ‘astonishing’ U-turn by the government over pension term assurance, some financial consumers could face a break from insurance company Legal and General .

Apparently, those customers who have applications pending for tax efficient life insurance plans (TELIP), including PTA, will be offered free temporary life cover by the firm. Consumers who have TELIP plans underway, and who applied before December 6th 2006, could be entitled to free life cover up to 1 million pounds.

The managing director for protection at Legal and General, Bernie Hickman, said: "We are committed to providing peace of mind for people who feel unsure of their position now that the government has called into question the tax relief on pension term assurance. Whether an applicant has received acceptance terms or is awaiting an underwriting decision, they will have at least some cover."

The move by the insurer reflects one company’s stand against shifting governmental policy, and will be warmly greeted by life insurance consumers.
